What is the appeal in looking like a branch of the UN?

Guy Noir - Private Eye, our underground correspondent we keep on retainer in an Atlantic seaboard city that knows how to keep its secrets, also seemed quite excercized about this, as he communicated recently:
Much better to sound like a government official than a Pope, even if we insist we are no NGO. When there is a "Speaker's Line Up" and an "official presentation," you realize we have ceased to be dealing with religion and are instead competing with government and celebrity machines. How long before we see The EarthKeeper's Bible or Spiritual Disciplines for the Environmentally-Aware...?
Here were are: Augustinus, "For Pope's Environment Encyclical, an unusual line-up of presenters for official Vatican press conference, including climate change radical" (Rorate Caeli, June 10, 2015):
he Vatican has just revealed in today's Bollettino the line-up of speakers for the official presentation of the "Environment Encyclical", Laudato Si, on June 18 at the New Synod Hall.
The most interesting is probably Prof. John Schellnhuber, Founding Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, proponent of a "zero-carbon world," known for his "aggressive stance on climate policy," and for having famously declared in 2009 that the "carrying capacity" of the Earth is less than one billion people! He is also known, according to Augustinus, for his "intense advocacy of rapid de-industrialization in order to stave off global warming." You've really got to read the quotes to believe this guy's for real. And, last but not least, he is an advocate of a real form of "World Government," something advanced also in the cause of climate control. One has to wonder why the Vatican selected him to be the sole layman and environmental "expert" to present on the occasion of the debut of the Pope's new encyclical. Really.

When I was at UMichigan I taught with a visiting prof from the Potsdam Institute. He got his PhD at UM though we thought that was a marvel because he was a total hack. Even the undergrads could sniff it out. He was a climate change alarmist with a simplistic/shoddy understanding of social science methodology. We found that strange because UM routinely ranks as a top five program in statistics and formal modeling. On the plus side, he was a very nice man. A German, of course.

HUMANUM GENUS (On Freemasonry)
Pope Leo XIII

Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII 20 April 1884

To the Patriarchs, Primates, Archbishops, and Bishops of the Catholic World in Grace and Communion with the Apostolic See.

1. The race of man, after its miserable fall from God, the Creator and the Giver of heavenly gifts, "through the envy of the devil," separated into two diverse and opposite parts, of which the one steadfastly contends for truth and virtue, the other of those things which are contrary to virtue and to truth. The one is the kingdom of God on earth, namely, the true Church of Jesus Christ; and those who desire from their heart to be united with it, so as to gain salvation, must of necessity serve God and His only-begotten Son with their whole mind and with an entire will. The other is the kingdom of Satan, in whose possession and control are all whosoever follow the fatal example of their leader and of our first parents, those who refuse to obey the divine and eternal law, and who have many aims of their own in contempt of God, and many aims also against God.

OK, it would appear to go without saying that your typical judgmental pharisaical rule-following Roman Catholic Traditionalist would consider that this great pope had fore-shadowed the United Nations with this definition; but, apparently, the United Nations, a captious collection of demented dog-eating devil-worshippers, retarded rapists, limaceous liberals, thieving theomanaics, petulant piss-ants, mephitic mountebanks specialising in misguided macrology are men who can't tell the difference between macrame and macaroni and who, when they are not at the buffet table scarfing down free food, are trying to play grab ass with the women in the Taiwanese delegation. (Is that too churlish?)

Au contraire, it is the hope of mankind according to Pope Pau VI:

For us, first of all. You know very well who we are, and whatever your opinion of the Pontiff of Rome may be, you know that our mission is to bring a message for all mankind. We speak not only in our own name and in the name of the great Catholic family, but also in the name of the Christian brethren who share in the sentiments we are expressing here, and especially of those who have been kind enough to designate us explicitly as their spokesman. This is the kind of messenger who, at the end of a long journey, is handing over the letter that has been entrusted to him. Hence we have an awareness of living through a privileged moment - brief though it be - when a wish borne in our heart for almost twenty centuries is being accomplished. Yes, you recall it. We have been on our way for a long time and we bring a long history with us. Here we are celebrating the epilogue to a laborious pilgrimage in search of an opportunity to speak heart to heart with the whole world. It began on the day when we were commanded: «Go, bring the good news to all nations.» You are the ones who represent all nations.

Permit us to say that we have a message, and a happy one, to hand over to each one of you Our message is meant to be first of all a solemn moral ratification of this lofty Institution, and it comes from our experience of history. It is as an "expert on humanity" that we bring this Organization the support and approval of our recent predecessors, that of the Catholic hierarchy, and our own, convinced as we are that this Organization represents the obligatory path of modern civilization and world peace.
